WebAug 16, 2002 · Ben Kittredge is well known. The company supplied westerners with arms and equipment starting in 1847. Adams in London put out the last of their double-action percussion arms in 1866 and switched to cartridge arms with a pattern 1867 pistol, followed up by an 1872 and several variations. By 1859, there were a number of single-shot breech-loading rifles available to the American military and public. These included the Sharps rifle (1848), the Smith carbine (1857), and others. Those most suitable for military use were loaded through the breech, but required a separate percussion cap to ignite the cartridge.
