WebWhat is an Equivalent Focal Length? (aka Field of View) For most of photography’s history, photographs were taken on film, recording images that measured 36mm tall and 24mm wide. With the sprocket holes, the physical film was 35mm in height, giving the film the name “35mm.” (Confusingly, 35mm film is sometimes referred to as “135 format.”) WebA lens focal length that’s greater than 50mm is considered a long focal length. This view is narrower than the normal view we’re accustomed to when paying bare attention. An image taken with a 100mm telephoto lens will have a much smaller section of coverage than a normal or wide-angle field of view.
